Teaching Self-Belief

Steve Jobs nailed it when he said everything around us was made by people no smarter than us. That hit differently when I finally got it in my early 20s, and it's exactly what our kids need to hear.

But here's the thing - you can't just tell kids to believe in themselves. They need to see it in action.

Let them watch you tackle that home project you're not quite sure about. Show them how you bounce back when things go sideways. Make "not yet" part of your family vocabulary.

The goal isn't to raise kids who never fail. It's to raise kids who know that failing is just part of figuring it out. Because confidence isn't some magic thing you're born with - it's built one "I can do this" at a time.

And sometimes that starts with watching dad try, fail, and try again.

Jake Burton - Building More Than Boards

Before Burton became a snowboarding empire, Jake Burton Carpenter was just a dad trying to share his love of the mountains with his kids. While most of us struggle to plan a weekend trip, Jake took his family on a year-long adventure in 2005, chasing snow and waves across six continents.

Between revolutionizing an entire sport and running a global company, he still managed to rack up 100 days on snow each year - most of them with his three sons strapped in beside him. By age 3, his kids were already learning to ride, turning the family business into a family adventure.

But maybe his greatest trick? Making sure his passion became quality time, not something that took him away from his family. After his passing, his son George said it best: "Thank you for creating the world for me and so many others. Thank you for showing us how to live.

The Ultimate Adventure Van

Winnebago dropped their 2025 Revel, and it's badass. This isn't your typical soccer practice hauler - we're talking 211 horses of turbo-diesel power and enough off-grid juice to disappear for a week.

The highlights:

  • Lift-up bed with gear garage beneath (bikes, boards, whatever)

  • Outdoor cooking setup for camp chef flex

  • New jump seats that won't make the kids hate road trips

  • Tech that makes your smart home look dumb

Yeah, she's pricey, but sometimes you've got to pay to play. Besides, can you really put a price on being the dad with the ultimate adventure rig?

What Else We’re Eying Up:

What's this HYROX thing everyone's talking about?

If your Instagram feed is suddenly full of people pushing sleds and looking miserable, you've discovered HYROX.

Here's the deal: you run 1km, do some functional workout (like sled pushes or rowing), then repeat that seven more times. Yeah, eight rounds total.

Why's everyone hooked? It's standardized and indoors, meaning you can compare times with anyone worldwide. No "my course was hillier" excuses. Plus, regular dads are crushing this between soccer practice runs and conference calls.

Fair warning: it'll humble you. But if you're looking for something to train for that isn't another marathon, this might be your jam.

Military Hack for Better Emails

BLUF: Bottom Line Up Front.

It's how the military starts every message with the key point, then follows with details.

Bad email: "Hey, after reviewing the schedule and considering everyone's availability, including the contractor's timeline and weather forecast, we should probably push the deck project to next weekend."

BLUF version: "Deck project moved to next weekend. Details below:"

Try it at work. Watch how fast things start moving.
