Staying Present With Our Kids

The following question was floating around the Dad Day Slack group this week: “How do you stay truly present in your kids’ lives, instead of just being a spectator?”

Dads chimed in with real, practical advice:

  • Phones Away: Several dads shared that putting the phone in another room or upside down with Do Not Disturb turned on helps cut the temptation. Out of sight, out of mind.

  • Accountability: Some couples hold each other accountable if they catch the other scrolling when they should be engaged. It’s not perfect, but it helps.

  • Small Shifts: One dad said instead of aiming for broad goals like “be more present,” he sets tiny ones: What can I learn, enjoy, or remember from this moment right now?

  • Boundaries: Limiting screen time with passcodes, or setting automatic Do Not Disturb hours, made it harder to slip back into old habits.

The thread made it clear…being present doesn’t mean you’ll get it right all the time. It’s about intention, small boundaries, and building routines that keep us in the game with our kids instead of watching from the sidelines.

WEEKEND BURNER

Been running Josh Bridges’ Operation LFG the past two weeks. A gritty mix of strength and conditioning. I’m sidelined from running thanks to a hairline fracture + plantar (fun times), so I’ve just been swapping the runs for rows.

Here’s a sample from yesterday.

20 min AMRAP (as many rounds as possible):

  • 200m run (or row)

  • 10 deadlifts

  • 10 dips

  • 10 dumbbell strict press
