FROM THE TRENCHES

Topic: Back to School Chaos

One dad reached out asking how others handle the madness of back-to-school with three kids. His house feels like constant chaos — the oldest acting like a teenager, the younger two fighting, and any attempt at early “me time” blowing up in his face. He asked, “Not sure what answers there are but to endure?”

Other dads jumped in:

  • Perspective: “Everything is a season.” With five kids at home, one dad said the key has been learning to sit with emotions and understand where his kids’ outbursts are really coming from.

  • Self-awareness: Another dad admitted his 6-year-old mirrors the way he was as a kid, which makes him overreact. He’s working on separating his past from her present.

  • Tools: Some dads lean on books like How to Stop Losing Your Sht With Your Kids* or Good Inside, with practical takeaways like controlling what you can, apologizing after blowups, and reminding your kids your love doesn’t change.

  • Prep work: And of course, the practical hacks — pack lunches, lay out clothes, and get water bottles filled the night before. As one dad put it: “Some days you just get your ass kicked by 8am.”
