Some stories don’t need much explaining. You meet the people, spend a little time with them, and pretty quickly realize there’s something there. Something worth slowing down for. Something worth sharing.
That’s how we felt about Mike Medved.
Mike is a dad of three in Pittsburgh. He’s a middle school history teacher, a musician, a former professional basketball player in Europe, a husband, and the kind of guy who seems to carry a lot without making a big show of it.
He’s also Simon’s dad.
Simon, Mike’s oldest son, has severe cerebral palsy. And earlier this year, Mike pushed Simon through the Pittsburgh Marathon.
Twenty-six point two miles. But this story was never really about the marathon.
It was about a dad making sure his son was part of the adventure. It was about the daily choice to show up. To keep going. To find joy inside the hard stuff. To bring your people with you, even when the road is heavier than you imagined.
That’s why we made this film.
Our Go West series exists to tell stories of dads across America who are choosing the harder, more meaningful road. Dads who are building, sacrificing, creating, leading, and loving their families in ways that deserve to be seen.
Mike’s story is one of those stories.
Over several months, we followed Mike and his family through training runs, music, fatherhood, the marathon, and the everyday rhythm of life with three kids. What we found was not a perfect story. It was better than that.
It was honest. It was joyful. It was heavy at times.
And it was a reminder that strength does not always look like powering through on your own. Sometimes strength looks like bringing your son with you. Into the crowd. Into the city. Into the noise. Into the adventure.
Thanks for watching. And thanks to Mike, Hillary, Simon, Ruth, and Aaron for letting us into their story.
