On Playing the Long Game

Remember that "you'll thank me later" line your dad used to drop? Turns out, he was onto something.

Most of parenting is planting seeds you won't see grow for years. Teaching them to say please when they'd rather scream. Showing up to those mind-numbing toy car races on the kitchen floor. Reading the same book for the 400th time because it's "the one with the voices."

It's choosing the harder right over the easier wrong, even when they're pushing every button you've got. Even when you're tired. Even when no one's watching.

They won't get it now. They won't get it next year. But someday - maybe when they're doing these same small things for their own kids - they'll understand what you were building all along.

Until then, keep playing the long game.

Jesse Thomas - Raising the Bar

When professional triathlete Jesse Thomas couldn't find an energy bar that worked for his allergies, he did what any reasonable person would do - started making them in his kitchen. That weekend project turned into Picky Bars, now a multimillion-dollar natural food company.

But here's where it gets interesting: becoming a dad didn't slow down his hustle - it focused it.

After retiring from professional triathlon, Jesse faced a new challenge: growing a business while being present for his family.

His solution? Bringing his kids into the entrepreneurial journey, letting them witness both the struggles and triumphs firsthand."I want my kids to see that success isn't just about the finish line, it's about the grit it takes to get there," he says.

In 2021, he sold Picky Bars to Laird Superfood, proving that sometimes the best business decisions come from solving your own problems - and bringing your kids along for the ride. Give Jesse a follow here.

The G-Shock GD010

Just dropped at Huckberry: G-Shock's new GD010 is basically the Toyota Hilux of watches. This bad boy's got a 10-year battery life (not a typo) and enough durability features to survive whatever your day throws at it.

  • Carbon Core Guard (fancy way of saying it's really hard to break)

  • Backlight for whatever 2am brings

  • All the usual suspects: timer, stopwatch, alarms

  • Auto calendar that'll keep track of dates until 2099 (optimistic, G-Shock)

  • Available in 3 colors

At under $100, we’re adding this to the collection. Get yours here.

Winter Might Be Your Secret Weapon

Turns out that morning jog you've been putting off because "it's too cold" could be your fitness cheat code. Science says exercising in the cold activates special fat cells that actually help burn more calories.

Your body's way of saying "thanks for getting off the couch when it's freezing." No fancy gear required. No complicated routines. Just you, the cold, and some extra calorie burn.

Mountain Code: Don’t Be That Guy

If you're hitting the slopes this winter, it’s good to know the unwritten rules:

  • Downhill riders have right of way. Always. If you're behind them, you're responsible for not turning them into a yard sale.

  • Don't stop where people can't see you. Behind rollers or in narrow spots = bad news. Edge of the run = good.

  • Looking uphill before merging isn't optional. Same rules as highway driving, but with more snow.

  • Ski with a leash or brake. Nobody wants to chase your runaway board down the mountain.

  • Help if you see someone down. Unless they wave you off, stop and check. Mountain karma is real.

  • Don't put the bar down without warning. "Bar down!" is the universal heads-up your nose will thank you for.

  • Have fun out there!

Spaces that make you want to stay a while

A 22-story skyscraper laid on its side in Joshua Tree, wrapped entirely in mirrors. Film producer Chris Hanley's 5,500 sq ft masterpiece disappears into 90 acres of desert, right up against the national park.

Floor-to-ceiling glass turns the Sonoran wilderness into wallpaper, while a massive indoor pool runs the length of the living space. Modern architecture meeting ancient terrain in the most surreal way possible.
