Progress Over Perfection

It’s easy to think we need to get everything right as parents. Every reaction, every decision, every word. The truth? We’re going to blow it. We’ll lose patience, we’ll miss a moment, we’ll say the wrong thing.

But that’s not what our kids remember. They remember the pattern. They remember if you keep showing up, if you try again tomorrow, if you make space for them even when you’re tired.

Parenting is more like training than performing. Small reps, stacked over time, matter far more than perfection.

So instead of aiming for flawless, aim for present. The progress you make by showing up every day will mean more to your kids than getting it “right” ever will.

Tony Finau grew up in a cramped garage in Utah, hitting golf balls off scraps of carpet. His parents sacrificed everything so he could chase the game and that pressure shaped him into one of the PGA Tour’s brightest stars.

Now a father of six, Finau wrestles with the flip side: raising kids who don’t face the same struggles he did.

“My kids don’t feel the pressure I had growing up. I just try to keep them accountable for what they want to accomplish.”

Family always comes first. Finau is known to skip tournaments just to caddie at his son’s junior events.

“My boys are only young once. I want to be there for them as much as possible.”

At the end of the day, trophies aren’t what drive him.

“If I raise good human beings, that’s the biggest win I can play for.”
